Green and Tonic
You can raise a glass to help green up some area bars. A new group of environmentalists are kicking off a program called Green and Tonic at watering holes all over the city.
A packed house on a weekday night at Elixir saloon in San Francisco’s Mission District saw the launch of the new program, started by a group of ten friends who wanted to do something to help the environment in their own community. “We like hanging out in bars,” said Green and Tonic founder Megan Jannsen. “We found Elixir which has an amazing green model. So we’re following that model and taking it to different bars around San Francisco.” Elixir is only bar recognized as a green business by the city. The group sells raffle tickets and has guest bartending nights, when regular folks can get behind the bar and pretend to know what they’re doing. The money raised goes to bars in the program to help with the costs of going green. “Everything from how you use electricity, your water, managing waste and recycling,” said Elixir owner H. Joseph Ehrmann. “And that’s applicable to any business no matter what it is.” So why try and green up bars? “As business owners we have a responsibility to do a little more than what we do in our own personal life,” said Ehrmann. “We need to be role models and help the community.” |
