Building SF’s Green Future
Mayor Gavin Newsom wants to build on San Francisco’s environmental initiatives and solidify the city’s reputation as the cleanest, greenest place in the nation.
During his inaugural speech, Tuesday, Newsom called the city a “testing ground,” for positive environmental change pointing to recent carbon tax and local carbon offset plans and the city fleet’s switch to biodiesel as examples of pioneering efforts. He also pledged to make the city carbon neutral by 2020. “It’s a big goal,” said Rick Galbreath, Executive Director of the Sierra Club’s San Francisco chapter, “But I think it’s doable” Newsom also spoke about aggressively pursuing alternative, clean energy projects that would be locally produced. Galbreath said increasing the city’s use of renewable energy was one of the most important issues Newsom raised. The city has a number of plans in various stages of development. A solar incentive program would help businesses and residents cover the cost of solar panel installation by awarding grants of up to $10,000. The city is also moving forward with a plan that will allow residents to sign-up for renewable energy use on their utility bill.
