Grow Your Own Tree
Want to try your hand a planting a tree? Well The Jonsteen Tree Company in Northern California wants to help. The company believes growing from a seed or organicly grown seedling is the way to go, rather than planting an older tree.
The Jonsteen Tree Company offers dozens of tree varities, including the Red Maple and different kinds of Redwoods like the giant Seqouia. What makes them unique is that they use sustainable growing methods and organic fertilizers to grow them. "That means using soil that has you know basically earth based products, no petroleum, chemically manufatoured foods or soils," Christensen says. "You are growing in peet, in soil that’s been clean and for food you are using fish emulsion, kelp, different products from sea or non traditional services like bone meal, that grow really good trees but not the way we are used to doing it." They also advise against using any chemicals to protect the tree from pests. "Pesticides are another thing, " Christensen says. "You want to make sure you are planting the right plant. A native or well selected ornamental is not going to have problems as far as diseases go. So really keep in mind what you are growing and where should reduce need for pesticide." As for growth, Christensen says seedlings have an advantage over larger trees. "We like small plants they will out perform bigger plants." explains co-owner Steen Christensen. "One of the things a small tree has an advantage over, it hasn’t been sitting in a container so the root system will be established quicker. " He also adds that nine times out of ten a seedling will outgrow a longer a larger landscape tree. "Most people don’t know that, there is some work with caring for it and that’s where we like to educate people into growing seedlings themselves a lot of value that way," Christensen said.
