The fresh ice cream made at Ici, a little shop in Berkeley, is meant to be eaten year round. Almost every day, owner Mary Canales visits the local market where she picks up seasonal, organic fruits for her ice cream, sorbet and sherbet.

“It’s great because I know where the food’s being grown,” said Canales. “I feel that the product was raised with so much care, by someone paying attention, that it tastes better.”

In the Spring, she makes flavors of strawberry and rubarb, then in the summer it’s all the berry flavors, while in the Fall, she cooks with pumpkin, maple and pomegranet, and lastly in Winter, she uses a lot of citrus and spices. Of course, her shop makes chocolate and vanilla year-round.

“It’s really simple, we buy fresh ingredients, in season, and we don’t do much, we don’t add preservatives or stabilizers, and the ice cream is meant to be eaten in one to two days,” said Canales.

Ici also makes sure to serve the homemade desserts in compostable containers, and they also compost all of their food scraps. Ici is located at 2948 College Avenue in Berkeley.
