The Race is On
Help save some endangered species and get some exercise at the same time. Sound like a good time? It is, but first you have to find the endangered species.
It’s all part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area’s Big Year, which according to the program’s director Brent Plater, “is a race against time to see and save each of the thirty three endangered species found in the area.” If that sounds like a lot of endangered species in one place, it is. “We have more than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon combined,” said Plater. The GGNRA is the national park that stretches from Marin to San Mateo County. The big year is also a competition to see who can spot the most endangered species. Sign up online, get a checklist, and get out there. The person who spots the most wins a yet un-named prize. So what should you look for? According to Plater, the California Brown Pelican and another bird called the Snowy Plover are safe bets, but if you don’t see any species right away, don’t worry. “If you’re really interested in seeing these species, it’s a year round thing,” said Plater. “So if you really want to compete, you have to be one with the weather and the way of wild animals.” The GGNRA organizes tours to find species and help preserve habitats in the park.
